Why Krabi Is Thailand’s Best Destination for Hotels Beaches and Island Trips

Arriving in Krabi and Renting a Car

Arriving in Krabi and Renting a Car

We were travelling to Krabi from Don Mueang Airport on a Thai Lion Air flight at 8:55. It took around 20 minutes to pass security, and we still had an hour before boarding. The airport was busy because we were officially in the high season, so you have to come early these days, even for domestic flights.

We had already booked a car online, but there are lots of car booking services beside the taxis once you enter the airport. The bus costs 150 Thai Baht, and taxi prices are cheaper than in Phuket, which is one of the advantages of arriving in Krabi. Our car cost between 1,000 and 1,200 Thai Baht. A normal Honda was enough for us, but a larger vehicle would cost around 1,500 Thai Baht.

Khao Thong Hill Viewpoint and Ao Thalane Bay

It was still early to check in, so we went first to Khao Thong Hill Coffee, a viewpoint about 20 minutes from the airport. It was a beautiful and peaceful place to relax, with lots of choices for entertaining yourself before checking in. Samet Nangshe was also mentioned as being around 80 kilometres away.

We also visited Ao Thalane Bay, where people come for kayaking. There are lots of beautiful places to explore by yourself and activities to do before or after checking in, so it is a useful stop when you arrive in Krabi early.

Cozy Hotel Near Ao Nang Beach

Cozy Hotel Near Ao Nang Beach

We had three rooms for five people at the Cozy Hotel. It was small, but it had everything we needed and the location was amazing. It was a few minutes’ walk from the beach and the main road, with a mountain view. The room was neat and clean, with a safe, a refrigerator, two complimentary bottles of water, a soft bed and a clean shower.

The hotel cost only 900 Thai Baht per night without breakfast. The buildings were connected, and the rooftop swimming pool was in the fourth building, so we did not have to leave the hotel to use it. At sunset, we went to Ao Nang Beach. The beach was busy, but we were lucky to catch a beautiful sunset and see the area coming back to life in the high season.

Phi Phi Islands Day Tour from Krabi

Phi Phi Islands Day Tour from Krabi

These days, the tours cost around 1,500 to 1,800 Thai Baht, although we got a better price after bargaining. Our journey started at 8:00 a.m. and was due to finish around 4:00 or 5:00 p.m. The trip from Krabi to the islands took about 45 minutes, and the ride was smooth because the weather was good. In the low season, boat rides can be rougher and rain can arrive from time to time.

Our first stop was Phi Phi Don Monkey Island, where we had about 40 minutes to walk around, snorkel, take photographs and swim. The water was amazing. We then stopped at the main island of Phi Phi, where we spent around an hour and a half. There was an open buffet with fruit and vegetables, as well as a special menu for vegetarians. The island also had souvenirs, activities, money exchange and other services.

Maya Bay Crowds and Low-Season Advice

Maya Bay Crowds and Low-Season Advice

The high season brought large crowds to Maya Bay. In the low season there are fewer people, but you have to be lucky with the weather. I had seen Maya Bay in different seasons, and on this visit there were hundreds, perhaps thousands, of people. It was difficult to walk through the entrance, but the beach was still beautiful.

You cannot swim at Maya Bay, although you can take photographs. A red flag marks the limit, and there are fines of 5,000 to 10,000 Thai Baht to help keep the place beautiful. The bay closes from July until September and reopens in October. If you want to see Maya Bay almost empty, the advice is to visit in May, June or early July and hope that it is not raining. A life jacket is required in the designated water areas, and the boat ride back to Krabi takes around 45 minutes.

Phuket to Krabi by Road: Timing and Scenic Stops

Road from Phuket to Krabi with limestone mountains

The road from Phuket to Krabi looks short on a map, but the trip can take about three hours in light traffic and closer to four hours when leaving Phuket at a busy time. The route crosses Sarasin Bridge to the mainland, then opens into greener roads and views of the limestone country around Krabi. Build in a stop if you need a break, and avoid planning a tightly timed tour immediately after arrival.

The drive is part of the experience: after the heavier Phuket traffic, the scenery becomes more relaxed and the karst mountains signal that you are nearing the Krabi area.

Staying in Ao Nang After the Drive

Ao Nang Krabi evening promenade beside the beach

Ao Nang works well as a base for a short Krabi stay because the beach, restaurants, tour sellers, and hotel transport are close together. After checking in, a simple evening can include a walk around Ao Nang Beach, dinner, and a look at the next day’s boat options.

Accommodation quality and prices vary widely, so compare the room, location, transport included, and cancellation terms rather than relying on a single “best hotel” claim. The original trip also shows why it is useful to leave time for check-in and rest after a long road transfer.

Booking a Phi Phi and Maya Bay Boat Tour

Phi Phi and Maya Bay speedboat tour among limestone cliffs

Boat sellers around Ao Nang offer day trips to Phi Phi, Maya Bay, lagoons, and nearby beaches. The source video recorded quoted prices of roughly 1,500–2,000 baht per person before entrance fees, but those were observations from that trip and should not be treated as current prices. Ask what the package includes, including hotel pickup, meals, equipment, transfers, and national-park or site fees.

Departures can be early, and speedboat rides may be rough. Travelers with back problems, pregnancy, or low tolerance for bouncing should ask about sea conditions and boat type before paying. A calm forecast does not remove the need for a life jacket and a licensed operator.

Maya Bay, Monkey Beach, and Responsible Island Stops

Maya Bay is a popular stop associated with The Beach, but access and boat rules can change as authorities protect the shoreline and marine habitat. The trip described walking in from a rear landing rather than allowing boats to crowd the beach. Check the current entrance rules, opening periods, and visitor limits before departure; the video’s quoted foreign and local entrance fees are historical observations.

Some tours also stop near monkeys, lagoons, and Bamboo Island. Follow red flags and marked swimming areas, do not approach or feed wildlife, and keep away from coral. A buffet or picnic stop may include Thai, European, vegetarian, and salad choices, but confirm dietary needs with the operator in advance.

Ending with a Viewpoint over Phang Nga Bay

Samet Nangshe viewpoint overlooking Phang Nga Bay at sunset

After returning to Krabi and Ao Nang, the trip can finish with a viewpoint visit toward Phang Nga Bay. Samet Nangshe is known for its elevated panorama of limestone islands and mangrove waterways, with the best light often arriving around sunrise or sunset. Allow time for the road, the climb or transfer to the viewpoint, and a safe return before dark.

For a two-day itinerary, keep the plan flexible: travel from Phuket to Krabi on day one, rest and arrange the tour in Ao Nang, then take the island trip early on day two. Weather, tides, sea conditions, and park rules can change, so confirm the practical details locally before setting out.
