My Thai Girlfriend Had a Secret I Wasn’t Supposed to Find
Meeting a Thai Woman in Bangkok

That’s actually my first name. I’m 36 Australian and originally from Brisbane. I’ve never been married. I don’t have kids and I work remotely doing website development and online advertising. I first visited Thailand in 2019, but it wasn’t until 2023 that I decided to base myself here for a while. I could work from anywhere and paying Australian rent while sitting on a laptop all day was starting to feel ridiculous. I chose Bangkok. That’s where I met a Thai woman, Alcohol Fern. She was 31 and worked for a cosmetics company. We met on Bumble and messaged for about a week before meeting at a Japanese restaurant near Arri. She was about 20 minutes late and blamed Bangkok traffic. So, I told her she’d used the most Thai excuse possible. She replied that I’d lived in Bangkok for three months and already complained like a Thai person. That was Fern, very sarcastic and quick. Probably one of the reasons that we got on so well. There was none of the financial stuff you sometimes hear about.
She had a decent job, her own car, and lived with her older sister. I paid for our first dinner and she insisted on paying the next time. For the first few months, we kept things casual. We’d see each other maybe twice a week. Sometimes she’d stay at my condo and occasionally we’d go away somewhere for the weekend. Then, without really discussing it, we became a couple. This is probably more important later. We never actually sat down and had the are we officially boyfriend and girlfriend conversation. I am 36, not 16. She had clothes at my condo. She stayed there three or four nights a week. I’d met her sister. She’d met my friends and we’d traveled together. She called me her boyfriend. And I called her my girlfriend. And as far as I was concerned, that answered that question.
For nearly a year, everything was good. Then one Sunday, we were driving back to Bangkok after spending the weekend in Wah Hin. We stopped at a gasoline station and Fern went inside to get coffee. Her phone was connected to the car because she had been playing music. A message appeared on the screen. It was from a man called James. It said, “Miss you already free simple words.” That’s how this entire mess started. Fern came back with the coffees and I asked her who James was. She said, “Friend.” I asked why a friend was telling her that he missed her. She immediately said I was being jealous and that annoyed me because I hadn’t accused her of anything. I was asking a perfectly reasonable question. Eventually, she admitted James was British and they dated before she met me. Okay, fair enough. Everyone has exes. Then I asked why he was saying that he missed her. That’s when she told me she’d met him for lunch earlier that week because he was visiting Thailand.
She hadn’t mentioned any of this to me prior. I asked why she had kept it a secret from me. Her answer was, “I know you don’t like so why I tell you and make problem.” So I remember just staring at her. Apparently, not telling me she’d met her ex-boyfriend was her way of avoiding an argument. We argued for most of the drive back to Bangkok. She insisted nothing had happened between them. And strangely enough, I believed her. My problem wasn’t that she’d had lunch with an ex-boyfriend. If she told me beforehand that an old boyfriend was visiting Thailand and wanted to meet her for lunch, I might not have liked the idea, but at least we’d have been able to talk about it. My problem was that she deliberately hidden the meeting from me. That made me wonder what else I didn’t know. For the next couple of weeks, I couldn’t get it out of my head. Then I did something I’m not particularly proud of. I checked her phone. She was in the shower and her phone was on the bed. I knew her passcode because we never really hidden our phones from each other.
So I decided to open Instagram. There were messages with James going back for months. There was nothing sexual in them at all. No dirty pictures, no arranging hotels. Actually, if there had been, this story would probably be much simpler. Instead, they talked about normal life, talking about work, food, family. He’d tell her about England. She’d been complaining about her boss. so many different things. Sometimes he’d say he missed Thailand. Sometimes he would say that he missed her. She never really said that she missed him back, but she didn’t exactly discourage him either. Then I found one message that changed everything. James had asked, “Does your Australian know we still talk?” Fern replied, “No, better not.” That was the moment I knew she deliberately kept their friendship from me. When she came out of the shower, I told her what I had done, and she went absolutely mad about me checking her phone. And honestly, she had every right to be angry about that. I really shouldn’t have done it.
But at the same time, I wasn’t going to allow the argument about me checking her phone to completely replace what I had just discovered. So, I asked why. She told me, “James, it was better that I didn’t know they were still talking.” She said, “Western men were too jealous.” So, I said, “You’ve been secretly talking to your ex for months, and somehow Western men are the problem.” And that is when I finally got the full story. James wasn’t just some bloke she dated for 6 months. They’d known each other for nearly 6 years. They’d been together for about 2 years when he lived in Bangkok. Then he returned to the UK. They tried a longd distanceance relationship for a while but eventually stopped calling themselves boyfriend and girlfriend. The strange part The strange part was that they never really stopped being part of each other’s lives. They kept talking. Birthday messages, family problems, advice, all of it. Fern described him almost like an old friend who knew everything about her. So I asked her one question. If James moved back to Thailand tomorrow and asked you to be with him again, what would you say? She didn’t answer. And that silence absolutely killed me.
The Secret My Thai Girlfriend Kept

I told her I wanted her to leave. She said I was overreacting because nothing physical had happened between them. Maybe nothing had, but at that point it didn’t really matter. She’d hidden another man from me for nearly a year. So we didn’t speak for almost 2 weeks. Then she appeared at my condo. We talked for hours. And this is where things became less black and white than I would have liked. Fern genuinely didn’t believe she cheated on me. In her mind, James was part of her past, but also someone who had been important in her life for years. She said she loved me and wanted her future with me. So I asked if she still loved him. She said, “Different.” Possibly the worst answer she could have given to me. So, I asked her what different? What’s that supposed to mean? Eventually, she explained that she still cared about him because of their history together, but she didn’t want a relationship with him.
She said I was the person she wanted to build a life with. James was someone she didn’t want to completely lose from her life. So, I told her that wasn’t really the main issue anymore. The issue was that she’d kept all of this a secret. If her friendship with James was completely innocent, why couldn’t she have told me about him? Eventually, she admitted the truth. She knew I wouldn’t be comfortable with them talking regularly. So rather than discuss it with me, she decided it was easier if I simply didn’t know. That was the part that I couldn’t accept. So we separated, not for a few days either, for nearly 3 months. I moved condos because my lease happened to be ending anyway. I went on a couple of dates. Nothing serious at all. Fern and I occasionally messaged each other, but I assumed our relationship was totally finished. Then something strange happened. Her older sister contacted me and asked to meet for coffee.
I’d probably spoken directly to this woman about five times in my entire life, so I assumed something was wrong. She told me Fern was miserable. I said I wasn’t exactly having the time of my life either. Then she told me something Fern hadn’t told me. James had asked Fern to meet him again before he flew back to England. She refused. More importantly, he’d apparently told Fern that he was considering moving back to Thailand. He then asked if there was any chance they could try their relationship again. Fern told him no. That stopped me in my tracks because remember the question that I had asked her. If James moved back to Thailand and wanted you back, what would you do? And she hadn’t been able to answer me. Then apparently almost like almost that exact situation happened and she rejected him. I asked her sister why Fern hadn’t told me. So she said Fern thought I’d never trust her again and that telling me would look like she was only trying to win me back. About a week later, I contacted Fern and we met for dinner.
There was no dramatic reunion. It was actually quite awkward, but we met again, then again. Eventually, we decided to try one more time. That was around 8 months ago and we are still together. The relationship is very different now. In some ways, it’s actually better because we stopped assuming we knew what the other person considered acceptable. We talked properly about ex partners, friends of the opposite sex, flirting, social media, and privacy. basically all of those conversations people avoid because nobody wants to sound jealous or controlling. I’ve also realized that I made one mistake myself. I thought being relaxed meant I was confident. I didn’t want to be the stereotypical foreign boyfriend telling his Thai girlfriend who she could and couldn’t speak to. So, I never discussed boundaries. I just assumed mine were obvious. They weren’t. But Fern also admits now that hiding James from me was wrong. She knew I wouldn’t like what was happening and deliberately kept it from me. To me, that’s not a cultural misunderstanding.
That is simply dishonesty. James is not part of her life anymore. I didn’t demand that she block him. She decided to do that herself. As far as I know, they’ve had no contact since. So, do I trust her completely? Before this happened, I would have said yes 100%. Now, I would probably say 95%. Maybe that’s actually more realistic. Anyway, I also don’t want people taking this story as some lesson about Thai women. I’ve had Australian girlfriends lie to me. My mate’s English wife cheated on him with their neighbor. Thailand didn’t invent dishonesty. But I do think relationships between people from different countries create more opportunities for misunderstandings because both people can assume their version of a relationship is the normal one. Fern thought maintaining an emotional connection with an ex wasn’t necessarily cheating because nothing physical happened. So, I thought secretly talking to an ex-boyfriend for nearly a year was obviously crossing a line.
Neither of us discussed it. Then, she hid it, and that’s where everything went wrong. Some people watching this will probably think I was a fool for taking her back. Maybe I was. Others will say checking her phone made me just as bad. I don’t agree with that, but I understand the argument. What I have learned is that relationships are incredibly easy to judge when you’re not the person in one. When it’s somebody else’s girlfriend, the answer is always simple. Leave her, block her, get out, and run Forest Run. When you’ve actually spent two years loving someone, it’s not quite so simple. One serious mistake doesn’t automatically erase every good thing that happened before it. So, I gave her another chance. But there’s a difference now. If something like this ever happens again, there won’t be any other chances.
