Rayavadee Railay Luxury Beach Resort
Arriving at Rayavadee on Railay Peninsula

First of all, you got to actually make your way to the beach. And what most people don’t realize is this is actually one of the most exciting parts of the adventure. We flew from Bangkok down to Krabi in southern Thailand. And from there, the resort sent a private speedboat to pick us up. The reason is that this beach has no roads leading to it, and the only way in is by water. So, instead of a boring taxi transfer, we were whizzing past these dramatic limestone cliffs of the Krabi coastline in serious style. This is a far cry away from the longtail boats that I’m used to taking. After a 20-minute ride, we pulled up right onto the beach, where the staff were already waiting to welcome us. Check-in came with a butterfly pea welcome drink before we were shown to our room.
Rayavadee sits on the Railay Peninsula in Krabi, surrounded by limestone cliffs, tropical jungle, and three of the most spectacular beaches in Thailand. But, what immediately stands out when you arrive is just how much the resort has been built around the jungle. Instead of one huge hotel building, the rooms are spread across individual pavilions hidden amongst the trees, connected by pathways that wind through the jungle. It kind of feels like a luxury version of Jumanji, and there’s wildlife everywhere. On the way to our room, we stopped to watch a troop of dusky leaf monkeys playing in the trees above us, and this was an incredible moment. What’s also surprising is how private it feels. Railay is one of the most famous and busiest destinations in southern Thailand, but once you’re inside Rayavadee, you feel surprisingly removed from it all. And this isn’t just a hotel with a great location. Rayavadee is a member of the Leading Hotels of the World, has received a Michelin Key, and has been recognized by CondΓ© Nast as one of the world’s best beach resorts.
But enough about the hotel. Let’s take a look where we’re actually staying. Hidden among the trees, our Terrace Pavilion is a two-story circular building that almost feels like a luxury treehouse. It has a curved wooden exterior, thatched roof, and huge windows looking straight out into the jungle. Pulling up to it the first time, you feel like you’ve stumbled in your own private hideaway. Unlike a lot of luxury resorts that feel like they could be anywhere in the world, Rayavadee has a real sense of place. Warm wood, bamboo details, traditional Thai-inspired design. It’s luxurious, but it still feels completely at home in its surroundings. The ground floor is one spacious living room area with wooden floors, comfortable seating, and those same huge windows framing the jungle outside.
Head upstairs and you’ve got a large bedroom with one of the most comfortable beds that I’ve ever slept in, along with more of that same tropical-inspired design. The Terrace Pavilion also comes with its own private outdoor terrace and surrounded by the jungle. In a cooler climate, you’d probably spend hours out here, but in Krabi’s heat, it’s more of a spot for a quiet coffee in the morning than somewhere you’d sit and lounge all day. It’s still a meaningful upgrade over the Deluxe Pavilion though, and it adds to that feeling of being completely immersed in the jungle. If you’re after modern glamour, Rayavadee probably isn’t for you. But if you want to wake up surrounded by rainforest with five-star comfort just minutes walk away from the beach, it’s very hard to find anywhere else that does it quite like this. But even though this room was impressive, it was far from the best room at the resort.
Rayavadee Rooms and Jungle Pavilions

One of the reasons we were here was because as travel advisors, we wanted to see this resort for ourselves and work out which rooms were really worth recommending to clients. So, we were given a private tour by the hotel sales team who showed us some of the best rooms at the resort. First up, the Pool Pavilion. Inside, it’s almost identical to the Terrace Pavilion. Some warm natural design, same split-level layout. The difference is outside, though, where you get your own private pool set with an enclosed tropical garden. But, in Krabi‘s heat, being able to step outside for a swim rather than walking to the main pool makes a real difference.
And if you can stretch it, this is the room I’d recommend for most people. But, then there’s the Villa. And this is something else entirely. It sits right on Phra Nang Beach, a two-bedroom private residence with huge indoor and outdoor living spaces, an outdoor bathtub, outdoor shower, and its own sauna, and a private pool. Walking through it, what I kept thinking about was this is how celebrities and ultra high net worth travelers experience Thailand. Then, I stepped out on the terrace with Phra Nang Beach right in front of me, and it was one of the most impressive hotel settings I’ve ever stood in. This comes with a price tag.
Expect to pay several thousand US dollars a night for this one. But, if you have to complete privacy or treating yourself to a once-in-a-lifetime stay, this one could be it for you. We spent the afternoon just relaxing and getting a feel for the place. One of my favorite things about Rayavadee is simply wandering the grounds. Everywhere you go, you’re immersed in nature, surrounded by the towering palm trees and jungle. And if you don’t fancy walking, you can always call for a buggy. The resort is big enough and the paths wind through the jungle enough that it’s surprisingly easy to get lost.
We also spent some time by the pool right on Railay Beach, and it might be one of the best pool settings I’ve ever come across. From the water, you’ve got uninterrupted views of the limestone cliffs towering above you with longtail boats drifting in and out of the bay. But, the part of the trip I’ve been most looking forward to was still ahead of us.
Dinner at the Grotto Restaurant

The thing I was most excited about at Rayavadee was dinner. I’d seen photos of the Grotto online for years. I wanted to know if it could actually live up to the hype. The Grotto is Raileavy’s signature restaurant built directly inside a limestone cave on the edge of Phra Nang Beach. We arrived just before sunset and managed to get table right on the edge just a few meters from the ocean.
To start, we ordered the scallops and tuna. Both were beautifully presented and more importantly, absolutely delicious. But what makes the Grotto really special is how much it changes as the evening goes on. We arrived in daylight, but as the sun went down, the cave slowly lit up around us. Then, after dark, a live jazz band started playing.
For our main course, we ordered the whole salt-crusted fish. Despite being completely covered in salt while it cooks, the fish itself doesn’t taste salty at all. It just keeps it all incredibly juicy and tender. And by this point, I think the Grotto had more than lived up to the hype. The food was excellent, but really you come in here for the setting.
You’re eating inside a cave right on one of Thailand’s most beautiful beaches with the ocean just a few meters away.
Exploring Railay and Phra Nang Beach

It’s easily one of the most memorable restaurants that I’ve ever visited in Thailand. As incredible as the hotel was, we hadn’t come all this way just to stay inside it. On day two, we set out to explore what’s beyond the walls of Raileavy D. Starting with a sunrise stroll in one of Thailand’s most famous beaches. And this to me is probably the main reason why you’d want to stay on Railay Beach is I’m on Phra Nang Beach right now and we’re literally the only people on it. You know, Railay Beach is can be one of the busiest beaches in Thailand on any day. It’s definitely not off the beaten path and you know, uh once it’s once 8:00 a. m. hits, boats will start coming in, especially by the time you hit midday, there’ll be quite a lot of people here. But I was walking down this beautiful beach on Phra Nang Beach right now and there’s literally literally no one on it. But if you’re not a morning person, don’t worry.
Breakfast is served right on Phra Nang Beach, so you still get that view either way. There was a great selection of food with both an a la carte menu and a buffet to choose from, and everything we tried was delicious. It would be easy to spend your entire trip inside Railay and never leave, but that would mean missing out on everything else Railay has to offer. Because this area is so much more than just one hotel. One of the best things about staying here is that you’re right on Railay Beach, one of the most famous beaches in Thailand. That dramatic backdrop of limestone mountains, colorful longtail boats coming in and out of the bay, palm trees lining the shore, it’s easy to see why this beach has become so iconic. It does get busy in peak season, but Railay sits at a quieter corner, so you get direct access to the main beach while still having a peaceful stretch right where the jungle takes over. A short walk away from the beach brings you to Railay Walking Street. A rustic little strip of no-frills bars, cafes, and restaurants. It’s a great place to grab a coffee, a cold drink, or some cheap Thai food before continuing to explore. And it’s the perfect contrast to last night’s meal at the Grotto if you like to mix things up.
The night before after dinner at the Grotto, I actually came to Railay Walking Street after dark to see what the nightlife was actually like. Most day trippers leave on the last longtail boat around 6:00 p. m. , so the evening crowd is a completely different scene. It has a quieter, more relaxed vibe to it with a handful of cool beach bars that are still open and a mix of guests from the hotels that are staying in the Railay area who are winding down for the night. It’s a world away from the busy strip of Ao Nang, but that’s actually part of the appeal. But, if you came here to party, this vibe probably isn’t for you. Continuing to explore past here, as you walk through the beaches, you’ll find little hiking trails branching off everywhere. Some of them even run through cave systems, and there are some killer viewpoints if you’re willing to climb them. And you should keep an eye out for monkeys along the way, too. One spot worth seeking out is Railay East Beach.
The beach itself isn’t the main draw. It’s lined with mangrove forest rather than white sands, but it’s one of the best rock climbing spots in the whole country with roots for complete beginners right through to advanced climbers and some impressive views out over the ocean. For me, it’s the perfect way to balance a bit of adventure with the luxury travel. But my favorite beach in the area has to be Phra Nang Beach. This is the one that we visited in the morning. Now, what’s interesting to me is most visitors actually miss it all together because it’s the only beach where longtail boats can’t land on directly, which is also exactly why the sand and water here are close to perfect with this stunning blue turquoise color. While here, I’d also recommend renting a kayak and paddling out to Koh Rang Nok. This is this huge limestone formation you can see sitting out in the ocean and it’s the same one you can see from the grotto. That’s the thing about staying at Rayavadee. The hotel itself is only part of the story.
Railay Walking Street and Outdoor Adventures

Within a short walk, you’ve got iconic beaches, jungle hikes, world-class rock climbing, hidden shrines, and a completely different side to Railay after dark. Over a few days, you’ll never run out of things to do.
What makes Rayavadee so special isn’t just one thing. It’s the combination of stunning natural beauty, adventure travel, and genuine five-star luxury built into the landscape that makes it unique.
It’s not cheap and prices shift throughout the year, but if this kind of experience is within your budget, it’s one of the most memorable stays that Thailand has to offer. And I’d be very surprised if anyone who books it walks away anything other than blown away.
