Krabi and Phuket Compared for Beaches Nightlife Culture and Price

Krabi and Phuket are two of the most popular beach destinations in all of Thailand. I want to give you a breakdown of what makes each one unique to help you decide which one will be best for you. We’re going to talk about things like their size, natural beauty, nightlife, culture, and price, all to help you make an informed decision about which one to choose.

Size

Let’s start by talking about the size. Phuket is a huge island. It’s much, much bigger than Krabi. You can spend weeks or months exploring Phuket. There are so many different beaches and places to explore, and you’ll have a completely different experience depending on where you’re staying.

Now, sometimes Phuket gets criticised for being too touristy, and maybe that’s the case. However, when most people say this, they’re talking about the western side of the island, basically from around Kata Beach to Patong. These are very popular locations, and they do get quite busy. They’re still very good, and they’re popular for a reason.

If you leave this touristy part of town, there are plenty of other beaches to stay at. For example, Bang Tao Beach, Chalong, or Rawai. These are way less touristy, and you’ll have a way different experience.

Krabi is considerably smaller, with only three main areas to stay: Krabi Town, Ao Nang Beach, and Railay Beach. This makes it a little bit more manageable. However, I think after spending maybe over a week in Krabi, you could begin to run out of things to do.

Natural Beauty

Next, I want to talk about the natural beauty. This is where Krabi really stands out. I think it’s one of the most beautiful places in Southern Thailand, and I think some of the landmarks are absolutely stunning.

The main area where people stay, Ao Nang Beach, is pretty nice, but I think the really most beautiful landmark is Railay Beach. This is one of the most stunning beaches I’ve ever been to anywhere in the world. It’s got two massive limestone cliff faces at either end of the beach, and this beach is probably one of those iconic postcard images where you see people relaxing with these cliffs in the distance.

On top of that, the island-hopping tours, including the Four Islands Tour and Hong Island, are also absolutely stunning. There are some really unique landmarks on these tours. If you do the Four Islands Tour, one place that you’ll visit is Koh Poda, which again is another iconic beach with this huge mountain in the middle of the ocean just popping out on this island. The sand is absolutely perfect as well.

Another one is the white sandbar between Koh Kai and Koh Tup. This is a really unique place because there’s a white sandbar that connects the two islands, so you can walk between the two islands on this thin white line of sand.

Now, don’t get me wrong, Phuket is really beautiful too, especially that western part of the island. Even the touristy parts have some of the best sunsets that you’ll ever see in Thailand because it’s facing the sunset. You can also get some amazing views of the island from the top of the Big Buddha Phuket. Phuket also has some different island-hopping tours, for example, Phang Nga Bay and Koh Racha. These are also really naturally beautiful, stunning places. However, I think the ones in Krabi beat them a little bit. That’s just my opinion.

Nightlife

Next up is nightlife. Being the much bigger island, Phuket has a lot more to offer in terms of nightlife. It’s got everything from dive bars to swanky cocktail bars.

Now, sometimes Phuket nightlife gets a bad reputation, and perhaps rightfully so. The most famous place in Phuket, and one of the most famous places in Thailand, is Bangla Road. It’s kind of like Khao San Road in Bangkok. There are a lot of nightclubs and a lot of go-go bars, so if you’re interested in seeing the wilder side of Thailand, this is somewhere you can go. However, that might not be the case for everyone, in which case there’s still plenty on offer.

In my opinion, the best cocktail bars outside of Bangkok all exist in Phuket. If you walk around the Old Town, there are a lot of really nice bars and cocktail bars. Especially, Chalong Bay Rum Distillery is one of the coolest places in the whole of Thailand. You can go there and do a cocktail-making class. This is a rum distillery. They make their own rum, and it’s absolutely delicious. However, you can go there to do a cocktail-making class or sample the rum.

In terms of restaurants as well, it has everything from delicious street food all the way up to five star restaurants. A lot of Thailand’s famous chefs have made a home here in Phuket, so if you’re looking for a swankier or more luxurious experience, Phuket might be for you. There’s just more on offer in terms of five star restaurants.

Additionally, in Phuket it’s a little bit easier to enjoy a beer on the beach. Both locations are actually quite careful about not lining their beaches full of bars. They like to keep it quite natural, and I think that’s a good thing. I would say Phuket has a handful more beach bars than Krabi. The nightlife in Krabi is fine. In fact, it’s very good. However, it’s not quite as varied and maybe not quite as upscale.

In some places, I found that there’d be a little bit less variation in the quality of restaurants, especially in Ao Nang. There are a lot of inexpensive restaurants along the beach, but nothing that really blew me away or that was really amazing. There are still plenty of bars and plenty of places to grab a drink, just less so on the beach, and it’s maybe not quite as wild as Bangla Road is in Phuket. Krabi is home to one of the most famous ladyboy cabaret shows in Thailand, so if you’re in Krabi, check out Blue Dragon Cabaret. It’s a really cool show. But overall, I think Phuket has more to offer.

Culture

Next up is culture. Outside of beaches and nightlife, both places have plenty to offer in terms of culture.

In Phuket, you can hike up to the Big Buddha. This is a giant Buddha statue right in the middle of the island, and it overlooks the rest of the island. It’s probably one of the more iconic statues in the whole of Thailand. There are a number of other temples in Phuket, including Wat Chalong. This is a really pretty temple in the south of the island.

I don’t know if this really counts as culture, but the island is also home to a lot of Muay Thai gyms. So if you’re interested in learning a bit about Muay Thai and working out during your trip, Phuket has the most to offer. There are a lot of famous gyms, including Tiger Muay Thai, Bang Tao Beach, and Top Team. These are some of the best gyms in the whole of Thailand, especially for foreigners, because they’re usually focused on English-speaking clients. If you want to learn more about Muay Thai, Phuket definitely has the best to offer in terms of gyms. There are also more fights going on, so you’re more likely to have a chance to see a fight in Phuket.

The Old Town in Phuket is a really unique place in Thailand. It’s one of the few places that was ever colonised by the Europeans, so it has a completely different architectural style. They call it Sino-Portuguese. They’ve got these really pretty houses, and they also have some of the better restaurants and some of the better street food there. Krabi has a little less to offer. However, one of the most famous temples in Thailand is the Tiger Cave Temple near Krabi Town, and this is a huge temple up on top of a hill. There are a lot of steps you’ve got to hike up to get there, but it’s really stunning. You get great views from the valley below.

The Price

Let’s talk about the price. In my opinion, in Krabi you get a little more bang for your buck in general. The hotels are a little bit cheaper, especially if you’re trying to stay close to the beach. I’ve noticed that the hotels in Phuket that are on the beach are quite pricey, actually, and they’re also more susceptible to price variations. If you’re coming towards Christmas, prices seem to go up drastically in Phuket, whereas in Krabi they kind of stay the same.

So if you’re looking at some beach hotels in Phuket and you’re thinking that they’re a little too expensive, maybe you want to look at Krabi, and probably you can get a better deal outside of hotel prices. Though there’s no distinguishable difference in price. For example, food and beers cost about the same in each place.

Krabi Is the Better Option

In my personal opinion, I think Krabi is the better option in that Railay Beach and some of the island-hopping tours are some of the best in Thailand, so it has the best to offer. However, Phuket definitely has more to offer, and you could spend a longer time there.

I’m sure no matter which one you pick, you’ll have a great time.
