It’ll spin your head and before you wake up from the dream, your money is gone. I’ve been there countless times and tried everything. I even walked a marathon once. And yeah, I walked into my share of tourist traps and saw other guys get hit even worse.

To keep you and your wallet safe. Here are the most brutal money mistakes in Pattaya and how to avoid every single one of them. Let’s start with the Pattaya money mistakes that mess with your heart.

Mistake 1 Falling in Love

Falling in love. If you’ve never been there, Pattaya is what heaven would look like if Ron Jeremy was in charge. Honestly, it’s like a dark web page with a beach. And it comes with a price tag. Since the Vietnam War, the girls and lady boys here mastered the art of how to turn tourists into ATM machines. Tip: Leave your heart at home. Keep an emotional distance.

Mistake 2, coming too early. Not what you think. What I mean, save Pattaya for when you’re 30 or 40. Don’t wait until you’re 60. But if you’re too young, it will mess with your brain. And if you get addicted to that lifestyle, it will cost you too much. Save it for later. When you are emotionally more mature and when your budget is higher.

Mistake 3, believing all the lies. Oh, by buffalo sick, no help, boyfriend. me first time. Oh, stop work next year. Sorry to say that, but everything a Thai girl in Pattaya will tell you is scripted. It seems like they all read the same secret book of effective lies passed down from generation to generation. Mistake 10: Celebrating your birthday. I once mentioned that it’s my birthday. Suddenly shots appeared for everyone. And who was forced to pay 5,000 baht? Keep birthdays off the radar unless you’re ready to burn your budget.

If somehow you think you need the privacy of a car ride then boo a grab or bold not really cheaper than the taxi but no scam risk and better service.

Mistake 24. Accepting damaged money. Ripped bills rejected bills. Vendors won’t take them. Don’t accept them either, or you’ll be the one stuck with monopoly money. Generally, check your notes. Fake money is a thing, too.

Mistake 25. Asking the baht bus driver how much. But is something that is so sensational, it is almost too good to be true. Blue pickup trucks that go round and round and round and round on fixed routes, and no matter how long you go, it will cost 10. Of course, if you interchange to go to Jomtien, you will have to pay another 10. Problem? Many tourists ask the driver how much. Sorry, this is like begging him to scan you. Pro move. And as soon as you arrive at the pier, you will meet speedboat guys. Price up to 4,000 baht. Tip: Just walk to the end of the pier and take the slow wooden ferry for $1. These next traps are expert level.

Mistake 28. Ignoring hidden hotel fees. Some accommodations look cheap until they suddenly add electricity, water, cleaning fees. Ask clearly, is this the final price? Say twice if you need to tip. Book online via trustworthy platforms like Agoda.

Mistake 29. Ignoring keywords. Read hotel reviews and hotel descriptions. And focus on just three things. Noise, safe, and languages spoken by staff. If it’s too loud, you will leave the hotel and book another one. If there’s no safe in the room, you are risking all your belongings. And if staff speaks other languages than English and Thai, you will have very loud tour groups blocking the pool and the breakfast buffet and the elevators. And you will have to pay for an alternative hotel.

Mistake 30. Trusting the friendly stranger. In Pattaya, everyone wants your money, even the experts and tourists. Most of them are alcoholics and/or broke and some of them look like 100 years of prison or criminal on the run. If someone’s too friendly too fast, trust your gut and walk away.
